Stay curious, preferably with a camera in hand.

Power

Power is often overrated when it comes to impact, especially in leadership. We can push people to perform. But, we can’t muscle our way into getting others to see our way.

Power vs. enrollment…choose wisely.

Neutral

Different situations and problems require variable approaches, tools and solutions. It’s precisely why we show up to a repair with a tool box and not one tool. Or, try riding a single speed bicycle up and down hills without the benefit of being able to change gears. It makes the work at hand so much more difficult, and sometimes impossible.

Our mindset has gears too. And, it’s easy to get out of synch with what’s going on around us. Neutral might be the most important setting of all then, to pause for a moment to reflect on the others. Their stance, ability, comprehension, mood…it all matters. It determines which gear we might select to help everyone move forward.

Warrior

This archetype is personified quite a bit in movies, video games, novels and such. However, beyond the fighter persona and the physical aspects of war, there’s the inner warrior. The person each of us needs to be when the going gets tough. The one with self discipline, determination, persistence and any other tools we need to mentally muster to get through a rough stretch in our lives. This might be the most important warrior of them all. The one who lives inside us and helps us achieve our goals despite our most formidable opponent, resistance, getting in our way.

Mental toughness trumps the physical, almost every time.

Exhaust

How we blow off steam, release our frustration, says a lot about who we are. Like car exhaust, our behavior can draw attention. What’s often more disturbing is when it’s done intentionally.

A muffler might be the best tool in our box.

Partnership

The company we keep says a lot about us. Partners even more so. Choose partners wisely… because the world is watching who we hang out with.

Shiny

It’s rare we accentuate the dull. The understated is there for a reason. But, without the lackluster parts playing their part, where would the rest be?

It’s easy to focus on the shiny bits. But, it’s the sum of the parts which makes it all possible. Three cheers for dents, dings and rust…it’s where the true character lives.

Message

The true story is rarely what we see on the surface. Understanding what’s really on offer requires some curiosity. And, a posture of openness, willing to see things differently.

What’s the real message? It might be worth doing some work to find out.

HT to Fisch…for taking the time to explain, well, the fish.
