Weekly Grab

This is my weekly compilation of photos and prompts. If you’d like to see these delivered daily to your inbox when they’re first released, including some subscriber only exclusives, consider supporting my work with a Substack subscription (also complimentary, but donations welcome). Thanks for following my curiosity journey.

Stay curious, preferably with a camera in hand.

Chemistry

Chemistry is complicated. It requires extensive study, a high level of comprehension and a lot of lab practice. So does electrical engineering, architecture, medicine, finance and teaching. The part of this intellectual work which is becoming increasingly easier is the knowledge acquisition. Today, information can be gathered, assembled and synthesized into understandable concepts in a fraction of the time than it took just a few years ago. The separator then is the ability to organize, discern and decide. And this still takes experimentation and practice.

What’s the hard part of our chemistry, our work? What can be reformatted, offloaded and made easier in order to make time for more practice? How can we rethink our processes and systems to create cognitive surplus so we have time to think and imagine what might be possible?

Problems

Most of our constraints and opportunities, at least in the material world, are governed by physics. Forces like gravity create both challenges and opportunities to go faster, higher and further. But, solving the physical problem is only part of our impedance. The real challenge is in the mind. Many of the obstacles we face are amplified by our own lack of understanding, imagination and willingness to dream. And, perhaps even by our fear of being wrong.

Any significant achievement starts with imagining what might be possible. Then solving both the physical and emotional problems which stand in the way. It’s Your Turn to build, to solve, to lead. Go!

Shed

There are very few things which have a higher value when they stay hidden, even when they aren’t at their best. Mediocre, broken and even bad might be better than nothing at all.

Success isn’t defined only by the best outcomes. Show us your bad ideas, failed experiments and unpolished projects. Show us what’s in the shed. Progress is underrated.

Journey

Sometimes, it’s good to be reminded the journey itself is worth the trip.

Stay curious and go for a drive.

Scars

Some scars are visible. Many are not. What stories are behind them? Does a scar need to be visible to be appreciated? We’re wired to appreciate what we see. Appreciation doesn’t require visibility. Digging deeper is uncomfortable, but where significance and generosity often lie.

Behold

Being awestruck doesn’t require grandiose, elaborate or expensive. It can start with the ordinary — a small act of kindness, a moment of genuine attention. Sometimes that stops us more completely than anything built to impress.

When is a smile one to behold?

Performance

Virtually every moment we live, we’re on stage. Our actions, behaviors and even inactions send signals to those around us. And, our performance matters…even when no one is looking. Because, someone might be.
