Weekly Grab

This is my weekly compilation of photos and prompts. If you’d like to see these delivered daily to your inbox when they’re first released, including some subscriber only exclusives, consider supporting my work with a Substack subscription (also complimentary, but donations welcome). Thanks for following my curiosity journey.

Stay curious, preferably with a camera in hand.

Settings

Making something to spec requires agreed upon standards and production. The precision of the process is necessary to achieve the expected outcome. Computers, tech and AI can help. But in the end, the artist still needs to choose. Which settings to play with? And perhaps, which to leave on auto? This dance requires expertise and understanding. Knowing which lever to pull and why is our advantage. And the one point of control we should guard quite fiercely.

Knowledge is power.

Style

Remember, there’s always someone it resonates with…it’s just not you.

Fit

We often design parts for fit in order to improve efficiency, production or simple aesthetic appeal. We can apply the same approach to team building, architecture and music. It’s important to recognize individuality when developing systems. And, selecting the ones which fit well together. It’s difficult on the front end, yet easy to see on the back end when it doesn’t work.

What are some characteristics, values or qualities which are sacred to your project or endeavor? What aspects of the fit are you unwilling to change?

Blank Sheet

Every project needs to start. And often, a blank sheet is a good option.

Where are we limiting our creativity with preconceived notions of what it’s supposed to look like? How can a blank sheet help us craft something differently?

Sensible

Of course it’s not sensible, which is precisely the point.

Getting attention isn’t the hard part, keeping it is.

Dated

New has value. But, most of it is tied to the future. Usefulness, ability and joy, are all expected, but unproven at this point. The story has yet to unfold. Old, on the other hand, is a container full of stories…many worth digging for.

Find something dated and explore it. It might just lead you somewhere new.

Stay curios.

Keep Out

Marketing is about tension, enrolling someone in a story of…

  • Having more
  • Seeing more
  • Knowing the secret behind this
  • Discovering something new
  • Meeting someone new
  • Being part of something special

The veil and barriers are part of the story. They amplify the tension. And, we can start by creating something worth the wait.
