Weekly Grab

This is my weekly compilation of photos and prompts. If you’d like to see these delivered daily to your inbox when they’re first released, including some subscriber only exclusives, consider supporting my work with a Substack subscription (also complimentary, but donations welcome). Thanks for following my curiosity journey.

Stay curious, preferably with a camera in hand.

Specific

In almost every case, it pays to avoid vagary. Getting to the point is, well, the point of most communication. Yet, vague is more common because it helps us hide, perhaps to avoid discomfort, or maybe to embellish the facts in some way. Whether intentional or not, a lack of specificity leaves something on the table. Of course, closely related is presenting too much information in hopes of covering more ground or reaching more people. Somewhere in between, there’s a happy medium.

Conviction

It’s one thing to talk about what we believe in. It’s another to act it out.

Do our ideals and values show up in our work? And, what about when no one is looking?

Stacked

Stacking is efficient and orderly. A curated and well designed pile helps flow…of goods, ideas and even problems to solve. But, it’s easy to fall into the trap of piling more on simply because there’s a stack. Now, the group loses its order, is under too much pressure and chaos ensues.

It’s helpful to understand the tipping point before adding one more to the pile.

Credit

Taking credit is much different than receiving it. And, giving it is even more impactful. An important consideration, especially for leaders, parents, teachers and super heroes.

Privilege

Skills are something we can learn, improve or let deteriorate. It’s our choice to move forward or backward.

Height, birthplace, hair color and race isn’t a choice. Luck and the gene pool afford us certain advantages and perhaps barriers depending on our situation. But, even our constraints can be reimagined. Perhaps what we believe is holding us back could also be seen as a privilege if we reframe it a bit (or a lot). How can we turn our perceived disadvantages into privileges? How can we use them to improve our skills?

Removed

A shadow works because light is absent, has been removed through obscuration.

What might work better (or differently) if something was removed, perhaps something which is believed to be essential or necessary?

Tools

Some tools make work easier. Some unleash our creativity. Some keep us constrained. It’s helpful to reflect on which ones fuel our curiosity and sense for exploration. Which ones allow us to see what we otherwise might have missed? Those are the tools to cherish…and hold on to.
