Spec and Quality

Producing something to specification, to “spec”, means it’s predictable. It’s going to work precisely as promised. Quality, on the other hand, is interpretive. Is a typewritten letter better quality than one made on a computer? Can a low quality machine be made to spec? And then, we can add value and price to the mix. Is cheap and reliable acceptable?

The better question might be…what stories can we tell ourselves about spec and quality to produce better work for someone who cares about it as much as we do?
